The Maritime Office in Gdynia has selected the most advantageous offer for the construction of the first stage of the shipping channel through the Vistula Spit. The works for PLN 992.27m will be performed by a consortium of companies composed of N.V.Besix S.A., NDI S.A. and NDI Sp. z o.o.

Additional over PLN 270m

The tender for the construction of the first stage of the crosscut through the Vistula Spit was launched at the beginning of January this year, and the opening of the offers took place on 22 May. Six bids were submitted, with prices ranging from PLN 992.17m to PLN 1.4bn. The cheapest offer submitted by the consortium of N.V.Besix S.A., NDI S.A., NDI Sp. z o.o., was considered the most advantageous, which means that with the budget set at PLN 718.09m, the investment will require over PLN 270m more than originally assumed.

The first stage of the project will include a ditch more than 1 km long and 5 m deep, a protective harbour and an artificial island, which will serve as a habitat for birds. The shipping channel is to improve access to the plumes in Elbląg and guarantee Poland free access from the Vistula Lagoon to the Baltic Sea, bypassing the Piława Strait controlled by the Russians.

The work is already underway

Although the contract with the selected contractor has not been signed yet, preparatory works on the construction site have been in progress for several months. The construction was symbolically inaugurated on 16 October last year by Jarosław Kaczyński, who buried a geodetic post marking the water path through the spit. In the place of the future canal, all the trees were cut down in February this year. The planned completion of works under the first stage is to take place in 2022.
