The investment of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. will enable the construction of a foot and bicycle bridge over the Vistula River. Access to the Krakow Zablocie bus stop will be facilitated, as well as more convenient communication in the centre of Krakow. The undertaking is confirmed by a letter of intent signed by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and the City of Krakow. The modernization of the Kraków cross-country line is co-financed by the CEF “Connecting Europe” instrument.

Signed letter of intent

– The safety and comfort of passengers using rail transport is of paramount importance to us. During the planning and implementation of railway investments we also constantly remember to improve the comfort of life of the residents. The construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge at the railway bridge in Kraków is an example of the fact that large railway investments connect not only the regions but also contribute to the improvement of communication in cities. This is another step on the way to the goal, which is a safe, comfortable and punctual railway – said the Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk.

PLK is carrying out the project entitled “Works on the E30 railway line on the Kraków Główny Towarowy – Rudzice section, together with the extension of the agglomeration line tracks”.

– Today, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. signed a letter of intent on cooperation with Kraków concerning the construction of a bridge over the Vistula River, including a foot and bicycle bridge. If there are opportunities, we cooperate to provide residents with greater access to railways and to facilitate communication in agglomerations,” said Ireneusz Merchel, President of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A.

The new pedestrian and bicycle footbridge is to be built by the western railway bridge, from the side of the road bridge of Powstańców Śląskich. The facility will connect Zabłocie (Zabłocie Street) with Kazimierz (Podgórska Street). On the footbridge adjacent to the bridge there will be space for a pavement and a bicycle road. The building will be illuminated. On both sides of the footbridge, at the entrances, there will be lifts installed, which will enable people with reduced mobility to access the facility. Convenient communication will be provided to the Krakow Zablocie stop. Cyclists will enter the crossing by inruns located at the railway embankments.

According to the letter of intent, the project of the footbridge will be financed from local government funds. The initiative will be launched when appropriate funds for its implementation will be reserved in the municipal budget. The footbridge, as an element of the western railway bridge, will be built by the end of 2021.

PLK is building a new railway in Kraków

As part of the modernisation of the Kraków diameter line, PLK is rebuilding a nearly 20 km long track between the Kraków Łobzów stop and Podłęże near Kraków. Flyovers, new bridges, viaducts and stops are being built. After the completion of the investment, trains will travel at a speed of 160 km/h, and in the centre of Krakow 100 km/h. The total value of the investment is over PLN 1 billion. The project “Works on the E30 railway line on the Kraków Główny Towarowy – Rudzice section together with the extension of the tracks of the agglomeration line” is co-financed by the European Union under the CEF “Connecting Europe” instrument.
