In Swinoujscie, a permit for a road investment project (ZRID) was issued for the construction of a tunnel under the Swina River connecting the islands of Uznam and Wolin. The decision is immediately enforceable. The first works are to start in October this year.

Start of construction

Within a week, the construction site will be handed over to the general contractor. The first works will be carried out in connection with the sapper’s check of the investment area, as well as tree felling and geodesic delineation. The main works related to the construction of the tunnel start shaft on the side of Uznam Island should start at the beginning of 2020. Tunnelling of the tunnel with the TBM in accordance with the provisions of the contract should start in March 2021.

Tunnel under the Swina

The tunnel will consist of three parts, each of which will be constructed using a different method. The 475 m long part will be constructed on retaining walls, the 295 m long part will be excavated in the initial sections using the opencast method and the main part of the 1.48 km long tunnel will be excavated by TBM. There will also be a 3.4 km long road with almost half of it running through a single-pipe tunnel. The road will be single carriageway with two lanes.

Almost PLN 800m

The contractor for the investment is a consortium of Porr, Porr Bau GmbH, Gulemark and Energopol Szczecin. The value of the contract amounts to PLN 793m. The contract was signed in September 2018 and is being implemented in the design and build formula. The completion of the works and the commissioning of the tunnel should take place in mid-September 2022.

The investor is the City of Swinoujscie, and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) acts as a substitute investor.
